Carolyn Calfee, MD, MAS | Professor in Residence of Medicine and Anesthesia | [email protected]

Carolyn S. Calfee, MD MAS is Professor of Medicine and Anesthesia at the University of California, San Francisco, where she attends in the intensive care units.  She completed her undergraduate studies at Yale University and medical school at University of Pennsylvania before coming to UCSF for her residency and fellowship training, as well as her Masters in Clinical Research.  Her primary academic focus is the pathogenesis and treatment of the acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS).  In her free time, Dr. Calfee enjoys reading fiction, hiking in Marin County, and spending time with her family.  

 

Narges Alipanah-Lechner, MD | Assistant Professor | [email protected]

Narges is an assistant professor in Dr. Calfee’s lab, working on Metabolomics in ARDS as well as sub-phenotyping COVID ARDS using precision medicine techniques within the ISPY COVID adaptive randomized controlled trial. Narges completed undergraduate training in public health studies at Johns Hopkins University, followed by medical school at UCSF and internal medicine residency and chief residency at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center. Her ultimate goal is to study precision medicine diagnostics and therapeutics in syndromes of critical illness including ARDS and sepsis. In her spare time, before she welcomed her new baby this year and pre-pandemic, she enjoyed reading fiction, running/interval training, and traveling the world with her family.

Sidney Carrillo Haller, MPH | Program Manager | [email protected]

Sidney is Program Manager for the Calfee Research Group and previously served as Project Manager for the COVID-19 Multi-phenotyping for Effective Therapies (COMET) study. In this role, she supports a multidisciplinary research program seeking to improve our understanding of COVID-19 and ARDS. She previously worked in international and domestic HIV/AIDS and malaria research. Sidney has an MPH in Epidemiology and Global Health from Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health and a BS in Biology from California State University, San Marcos. In her free time, she enjoys cooking, hiking, and planning adventurous trips.

Olivia Chao | Clinical Research Coordinator | [email protected]

Olivia Chao is a Clinical Research Coordinator for the Early Assessment of Renal and Lung Injury (EARLI) study. She graduated from Northeastern University in 2024 with a Bachelor's degree in Biochemistry and a minor in Religious Studies. In her free time, Olivia enjoys photographing dogs around the city and practicing aerial arts. 

Carolyn Leroux | Lab Manager | [email protected]

Carolyn Leroux is the Lab Manager for the Calfee/Matthay lab. In addition to maintaining the lab, she works on the COVID-19 Multi-phenotyping for Effective Therapies (COMET) study, is responsible for the storage and management of biospecimens within the Calfee/Matthay lab, and runs many ELISA assays. Carolyn graduated from University of San Francisco where she earned her Bachelor’s in Biology with minors in Biochemistry and Neuroscience. In her free time, she enjoys walking around Golden Gate Park and going to the beach.

Chelsea Lin | Clinical Research Coordinator | [email protected]

Chelsea Lin is a Clinical Research Coordinator working on the COVID-19 Multi-phenotying for Effective Therapies (COMET) study. She is also a part of various clinical trials within the Calfee-Matthay research group. Chelsea graduated from the University of California, Berkeley with a double major in Public Health and Economics. In her spare time, Chelsea enjoys traveling and exploring the world and loves doing yoga.

Liam Magee | Clinical Research Coordinator | [email protected]

Liam Magee is a clinical research coordinator for the Early Assessment of Renal and Lung Injury (EARLI) study. He graduated from UC Berkeley in 2023 with Bachelor’s degrees in English and Microbiology. Outside of work, Liam reads a lot, surfs a little, skis when he can, and occasionally builds models of sailing ships.

Lucile Neyton, PhD | Bioinformatics Programmer | [email protected]

Originally from France, Lucile received her MSc degree in Applied Bioinformatics from Cranfield University in 2016 and then attended The University of Edinburgh for her PhD studies in Precision Medicine up until recently. In that time she worked on the subtyping of critical illnesses in humans using different types of data and clustering techniques. In her free time, she enjoys hiking and wildlife photography.

Angelika Ringor | Staff Research Associate | [email protected]

Angelika Ringor is a staff research associate in the Calfee/Matthay lab. Currently, she is working on the Crystalloid Liberal or Vasopressors Early Resuscitation in Sepsis (CLOVERS) study and the Mesenchymal Stromal Cells for Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (STAT) study. Angelika completed her undergraduate degree at the University of California, Irvine with a major in Human Biology. In her free time, she enjoys running and exploring new hiking trails. 

Aartik Sarma, MD | Assistant Professor | [email protected]

Aartik is an assistant adjunct professor at UCSF. His research is focused on integrating transcriptomic and metagenomic sequencing data from the respiratory tract to characterize phenotypes of COPD exacerbations and ARDS. Aartik is a graduate of Brown University and Harvard Medical School. He completed his clinical training in internal medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital and in pulmonology and critical care medicine at UCSF. Outside of research, Aartik enjoys hiking in Marin and cooking vegetarian food. 

Andrew Willmore | Research Data Analyst | [email protected]

Andrew is a data manager for the COVID-19 Multi-phenotyping for Effective Therapies (COMET) study and a research data analyst within the Calfee Research Group. Andrew received his bachelor’s degree from the University of California, Davis and now primarily uses R in his day to day to navigate the world of data. In his free time, Andrew rewatches The Dark Knight.

Nelson is a data manager for the Early Assessment of Renal and Lung Injury (EARLI) study and earned his Master of Public Health in Epidemiology & Biostatistics at Boston University. In his free time he enjoys rock climbing and reading.

Ann Zalucky, MD, M.Sc.​ | Postdoctoral Research Fellow | [email protected]

Ann Zalucky is an Intensivist and Clinical Scholar from the University of Calgary, Canada. Ann received her joint MD/MSc degree from the University of Calgary before going on to the University of Toronto where she completed residency training in internal medicine and critical care medicine. She is interested in studying respiratory mechanics and the lung-kidney axis to better define phenotypes in critical illness syndromes including ARDS and AKI. She is excited to work on projects that integrate proteomics with machine learning to examine heterogeneity in treatment effects. When she is not in the lab, Ann is looking forward to exploring hikes in the Bay Area and surrounding Napa Valley. She is a cocktail enthusiast and is keen on trying all the delicious multicultural cuisine San Francisco has to offer.  

Hanjing Zhuo, MPH | Research Data Analyst | [email protected]

Hanjing Zhuo is the Project Director of Clinical Coordinating Center in Cardiovascular Research Institute at the University of California, San Francisco. She also serves as senior data analyst in Dr. Calfee’s research group. Ms. Zhuo earned her Bachelor of Medicine at Fudan University Shanghai Medical College (Shanghai Medical University) and Master's of Public Health in epidemiology and biostatistics at University of California Berkeley before working at UCSF. In her free time, Ms. Zhuo enjoys reading fiction, gardening, and traveling with her family.
